Evaluate cell quality with the computer vision

In the area of regenerative medicine using stem cells, the condition of collected and cultured stem cells has a great influence on the success or failure of subsequent treatment. Its state management largely depends on the experience of cell culture engineers, and it is an important task to develop a method for quality evaluation of cultured stem cells. Since human epidermal keratinized stem cells show high movement during culture, it has been shown that quality evaluation is possible by measuring the speed of stem cells. However, the engineers visually performed it using a microscope to measure the movement.
 Therefore, we have realized the image analysis technology for automatic extraction of the area of skin stem cell colonies and automatic estimation of colony movement. As a result of evaluation using images taken with a phase-contrast microscope, we obtain results equivalent to those measured visually by humans.

EnPiT / enPiT-Pro is an information science and technology practice education program for undergraduate students and working adults, which is supported by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. The Computer Science program participates in enPiT Emb / enPiT-Pro Emb and has an initiative on the IoT embedded systems.
